Welcome to the new school year! A message from the Superintendent

Public education in Stanly County is alive and it is doing well. There is a mindset amongst some that public education is struggling and is faltering in this nation, and that is simply not true in Stanly County. There is a saying that perception is reality, but that is not the case here. It is our goal this year to work hard to spread the facts and let our community see that public education is not faltering or struggling in Stanly County. We have come a long way, but no matter where we are there will always be work to do and improvements to make.

Years ago, Jim Valvano gave a very stirring speech. In that speech he posed a question: How do we go from where we are now to where we want to be? He then answered the question by saying it takes three things:

  1. We must have an enthusiasm for life. There is nothing more exciting and full of enthusiasm than the students on the first day of school. The students bring an energy that is like no other. We as parents and staff must take that same enthusiasm, match it plus one, and continue it every day and all day long.

  2. We must have dreams and goals. We have over 8,500 students that walk through our front doors on a daily basis, eyes wide open, and the world ahead of them. Dreams and goals are not something we are short of.

  3. And finally, We must be willing to work for it. I grew up in Stanly County, I know the work ethic that exists here. We are a blue-collared community that was founded and continues to exist based on a strong work ethic. We know how to roll up our sleeves and work hard when there is a job to do.

So, we must take our strong work ethic, combine an enthusiasm for life, and we will thus put ourselves in a position to ensure that every student reaches their dreams and goals.

Welcome to the new school year,
