SCS Options
Science Fair
SCS students are invited to create science fair projects that clearly demonstrate the use of the scientific method to solve a problem. All elementary, middle, and high school students are encouraged to participate! The winners of a school level fair may compete at the district level. Winners of the district fair may advance to the UNC Charlotte Region 6 NC Science and Engineering Fair typically held in February.
Spelling Bee
Middle and Elementary Schools host their own spelling bees every year. Each school determines a winner and runner up, in the event the winner cannot compete. The winner is invited to attend the District Spelling Bee. The District Bee is hosted in February.
Robotics
Robotics clubs are available at elementary and middle schools. Robotics reinforces STEM concepts and collaborative, problem solving as teams create and program the robot to perform challenging tasks. Robotics teams are invited to the District Competition held annually in the spring. FIRST LEGO league offers official tournaments throughout the year statewide.
Math 24 - Hosted and organized in collaboration with Pfeiffer University
The 24® Game has been around over 30 years and it continues to help children sharpen basic math skills such as computation, problem solving, number sense, critical thinking, and pattern sensing. The competition is typically held in the spring.
High School Quiz Bowl - Hosted and organized in collaboration with Stanly Community College
Each high school in the county has a quiz bowl team that meets for practices and then represents their school at a county competition. It is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity, where quiz bowl questions span the entire high school curriculum and also include current events, sports, and popular culture. The competition is typically held in February.
Battle of the Books
Middle and elementary school students have the opportunity to read books and answer questions in a competition format. There is a maximum of 12 students per team for the competition. The competition is typically held in March.
SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The SkillsUSA Championships are competitive events showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. SCS has students compete annually at the regional, state, and national level. The state competition is held in April in Greensboro.
