Disorders of Speech:
ARTICULATION DISORDERS- student may omit, substitute, or distort speech sounds.
DEVELOPMENTAL AGES FOR SOUND MASTERY
3 year old: "b, h, m, n, w, p"
4 year old: "t, d, f, y"
5 year old: "k, g"
6 year old: "l, sh, ch, j"
7 year old: "v", voiceless "th", voiced "th", "s, z, r" and "l, s, r" blends
VOICE DISORDERS- student may have a hoarse or breathy voice that has continued for more than two weeks.
FLUENCY DISORDERS- student may appear to stutter (repeats the beginning of words, repeats whole words,
hesitates or stretches words/prolongs sounds in words.
Disorders of Language:
RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE- student may have difficulty in the following areas:
- Following Directions
- Comprehending Stories
- Reading Comprehension
- Understanding Questions (who, what, when, where, why and how)
- Understanding jokes, double meanings and abstract concepts
- Understanding grade level vocabulary
- Understanding idioms, making inferences and problem solving
- Understanding the language in math words problems; and may appear to be functioning below grade and/or age level.
EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE- student may have difficulty in the following areas:
- Giving Directions
- Expressing Ideas
- Answering Questions
- Using grade level vocabulary
- Grammar problems such as difficulty with pronouns, verb tense, plurals, prefixes, suffixes, etc.
- Limited vocabulary with frequent use of non-specific words such as "stuff, thing, this, that, there"
- Explaining how items are alike and different
- With Expressive Language skills and may appear to be functioning below grade and/or age level
