Power Outage

The following are procedures for reporting power outages in schools.

During School Hours:

The school will call maintenance to report a power outage.  If the outage affects the entire school, the Superintendent's office will be notified immediately.

The maintenance department will evaluate the reason for the outage and contact the appropriate power company to identify the purpose and length of the outage.  This information will be reported back to the school and to the Superintendent's office.  If the outage is to be for a significant amount of time, Child Nutrition will be notified so they can coordinate movement of frozen and chilled food.

After power is restored to the facility, the maintenance department will dispatch personnel to verify that HVAC units, coolers and freezers are reset and working properly.  The Superintendent's office will be notified that power has been restored and Child Nutrition will be contacted if required.

After School Hours:
When the school notifies the Maintenance Director or a Maintenance employee after school hours that there is a power outage the Director or employee will contact the power company and verify the purpose and length of the outage.  if the outage will be for an unknown period of time the director will dispatch personnel at intervals to monitor the school and take any necessary steps to reset HVAC units, coolers and freezers.  Child Nutrition will be notified that there is a power outage to coordinate movement of food.

The Superintendent's office will be notified of the outage and any information available.

Outages Due to Weather:
If there are substantial outages at schools due to weather, the Maintenance Department will vigorously monitor the progress of repairs during duty and non-duty hours.  Personnel will be dispatched to evaluate damages and assess and coordinate repairs.  Any necessary and appropriate evacuation of food products will be coordinated with Child Nutrition and every attempt will be made to save as much as possible.  Progress reports will be made to the Superintendent's office at prescribed intervals to update any developments.  Principals will be kept abreast of any new developments as soon as they are known.  Maintenance personnel will be dispatched to a school as soon as the power is restored to verify that HVAC units, coolers and freezers are reset and working properly.
